Vaginal Issues: BV & Yeast

Ladies, I know it is uncomfortable to talk about vaginal issues, especially ones that make us have discharge and odors. The stigma around it makes us less of a woman and cultivates shame. But the true danger around this is that when we don't talk about it, we can't HEAL it, and if we can't heal it, we can create real dis-ease. And there shouldn't be shame or negativity around something incredibly common!! We are in this together!

So, lets talk about it, specifically Bacterial Vaginosis and Yeast Infections. According to the CDC, "Bacterial vaginosis is the most common cause of vaginal symptoms among women, but it is not clear what role sexual activity plays in the development of BV. The prevalence in the United States is estimated to be 21.2 million (29.2%) among women ages 14–49." Thats a high number, which means the probability that you have had it once or will get it again is high and if not you, for sure one of your girlfriends or female family members has and will. Bacteria Vaginosis is when bacteria take over an alkaline environment within the Vagina. See, I know there is all this talk about wanting a pH, Alkaline lifestyle, and we definitely dont want an acidic internal system, but our vaginas actually need acidity to function properly. Acidity is part of their self cleaning mechanism. When the vagina is too alkaline, bacteria and yeast can over grow and cause infections. Bacterial Vaginosis can be symptomless or have a cloudy discharge with an odor, and a particularly recognizable odor after/during sex.

Herbal Remedies to help with BV:

- Yarrow mixed with Apple Cider Vinegar, Meadowsweet can be used as ritz baths

- Boric Acid Suppositories

- Garlic Suppositories

Yeast infections have a cottage cheese like discharge and varies from BV because of pronounced vaginal itchiness and burning. Sex with a yeast infection is highly uncomfortable and painful. The CDC says "in the United States, it is the second most common type of vaginal infection after bacterial vaginal infections.2 An estimated 1.4 million outpatient visits for vaginal candidiasis occur annually in the United States." Yeast infections can range from severe to moderate. Hormonal changes can also instigate yeast overgrowth by changing the pH level of the vagina.

Herbal Remedies to help with Yeast Infections:

- Goldenrod, Pau d'arco, licorice are all good for sitz baths or taken internally to kill candida.

In my shop I have Boric Acid vaginal Suppositories which are GREAT for BV and moderate yeast infections. "The Journal of Reproductive Medicine reported that boric acid cured 98% of women with chronic, drug resistant yeast infections" when inserted into the vagina once a night for 2 weeks.
